We discussed the landmark Greenpeace lawsuit in our previous post – in March, a North Dakota jury has found Greenpeace liable for $660 million in damages for their activities, which included physical damage, vandalism, and destruction of property, but also what Energy Transfer, the developer of the pipeline, called “misinformation that goes well beyond free speech.”
Now Greenpeace is attempting to fight back in what they consider to be a fairer venue: the Netherlands, claiming that Energy Transfer is attempting to intimidate Greenpeace in what will be the first attempt at using of a new European Union protections against what they consider to be a “SLAPP” (strategic lawsuit against public participation). Greenpeace is asking the court to hold Energy Transfer liable for both legal costs and damages.
