As artificial intelligence improves and begins to play a greater role in people’s lives, so do its power demands. New reporting reveals that as this push for more computing power grows, the limits of our power grid start to show:
“This month, Google announced a pair of agreements with utilities to plug in data centers with demand-response capabilities — helping those buildings use less power during periods of high demand on the grid. The grid operator covering the central U.S. is seeking approval for a plan to allow data centers to get on the grid quicker if they agree to limit power when requested.”
In other words, data centers may have to make temporary sacrifices just to keep the system online. Without consistent, affordable, and reliable power, limits may become the new normal as power generation struggles to keep pace with the electricity-hungry demands of AI.
